SURFING QUEENSLAND PRESS RELEASE:-
Currumbin Surfer Corey Ziems Wins The 2010 WAECO Alley Classic!
Gold Coast Queensland, Sunday, May 9th, 2010: Current Queensland Championship Circuit ratings leader Corey Ziems (Currumbin, Qld)) today claimed the 2010 WAECO Alley Classic securing a slice of Queensland surfing history etching his name once again alongside the likes of elite Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour competitors Joel Parkinson (Snapper Rocks, Qld), Luke Munro (Currumbin, Qld) and Adriano De Souza (Brazil) on the event’s winners list.
Ziems proved his 2007 Alley Classic win was no fluke, leaving nothing to doubt today as the famed Currumbin pointbreak delivered clean, contestable, 1m waves for the finals.
“I’m so stoked to win the WAECO Alley Classic for a second time,” said an elated Ziems.
“I live just around the corner, I was a member of the Alley Boardriders when I was younger and to win at my home break is a great feeling,” he said.
Ziems never looked in doubt winning each of his three heats en route to today’s final, before disposing of Thomas Woods (Burleigh Heads, Qld), Chris Bennetts (Main Beach, Qld) and Luke Archibald (Byron bay, NSW) who finished second to fourth respectively in the day’s decider.
Leaving nothing to chance when it counted, Ziems registered a combined two-wave heat total of 17.27 (out of a possible 20 points) in the final to Woods’ 16.40, Bennetts’ 12.00 and Archibald’s 8.94.
The fourth and final stop of the 2010, $16,000 Queensland Championship Circuit will be June’s Coolum and Alex Surf Sunshine Coast Pro, which will see a series champion crowned and also finalise the top two athletes to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2011 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.
Ziems will head into the event a red-hot favourite after extending his ratings lead with today’s results.
Also on offer was the highly sought after XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with Ziems bagging the double and walking away with four cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager after registering the event’s highest single wave score of 9.87 (out of a possible 10 points).
