Noah Lane Wins Tenth Anniversary Chiko MP Classic!
Gold Coast, Queensland, Sunday 17th April 2011: NOAH Lane (Burleigh Heads / Rainbow Beach, Qld) upset local favourite and 2009 Queensland Championship Circuit winner Nick Vasicek (Snapper Rocks, Qld) to claim a historic victory at the tenth anniversary Chiko MP Classic.
The Chiko MP Classic, named after the iconic Queensland surfing legend Michael Peterson is the first stop on this year’s four-event, AUD$32,000 Queensland Championship Circuit (QCC) and today’s victory catapults Lane into first place on the ratings as the state’s best surfers do battle for the prestigious crown of the Open Men’s State Title.
In a thrilling four-man final held in 1.5m barrelling waves at Duranbah Beach on the Queensland-New South Wales border, it came down to a two-horse race between Lane and Vasicek as both goofy-footers (right-foot forward stance) traded blows until the final seconds, with Lane securing victory on his final wave.
Edging out Vasicek by less than one-point (12.70 – 11.87), the final also saw gallant efforts from Tim MacDonald (North Stradbroke Island, Qld – 11.00) and Trevor Tripcony (Yaroomba, Qld – 10.60) who finished third and fourth respectively.
However, all was not lost for Trevor Tripcony with the Sunshine Coast stalwart sharing the honours with Paul Ward (Coolangatta, Qld) for the title of XXXX Summer Bright Lager ‘Wave of the Weekend,’ with both surfers walking away with two cartons of XXXX Summer Bright Lager after each posting a event high 9.67 ride (out of a possible 10 points) across the two-day competition.
Based on competitors’ best three-of-four results, the QCC series’ top two athletes will also get the chance to compete against the world’s best surfers at the 2012 ASP World Tour Quiksilver Pro Trials.
The Chiko MP Classic is proudly supported by Chiko, XXXX Summer Bright Lager, Red Bull, Australia’s Surfing Life, Five and ahalf Sunglasses, the Peterson Family and Surfing Queensland.
