Another season over and although it wasn’t stellar like 07 ,there were still plenty of great waves and good times had by all the Burleigh crew!
Big Tobes was a stand out at 8ft G-land on his first trip over, something I expected as he charges Big Burleigh so hard.He also had the added bonus of meeting up with the lovely Kat and spend some quality time with her sight-seeing and surfing infront of her pad at Balangan.
Hymie was a stand-out with his grab-rail cutties and tight pocket surfing and believe it or not-he can ambi-tuberide!I think his hi-lite was getting to surf 6-8ft Outside corner on a 6’3,even tho he had a 7’2 sitting at the house only 5 minutes away!he also hooked up with a few lovely ladies, some he paid for and some he got for free!
Benny is always a pleasure to travel with, the guy froths as much as any 15 year old grom, probably more! He’s not really interested in the party scene,a coupla beers at the end of the day was about as loose as he got.He has the same Indo mind-set as me-lets go surfin’!One day at Desert Point he only got 2 set waves, but he was calling them probably 2 of the best waves of his life, and still kept looking for more.
Joel was his usual solid self in surfing and build, cranking some ridiculously vertical backhand reos and death-grip pig-dogs.A coupla heavy nites on the piss was enough for him and trying to organise getting his missus overto Bali for an extra week while slightly tipsy was classic.2 weeks in G-land and 2 trips to Desert Point and some great days at Bingin rounded off another great season for Festivities!
Myself?Well definately Desert Point was the stand-out sesh,4-6ft,perfect tides and the boys calling it one of the best days of the year! The 80-90 guys out made it a bit of a mosh-pit,but a bit of patience and some hard hassling got me probably half a dozen of my best waves all year, with my last 3 definately locked into the memory banks!
Bingin and Ulu’s provided great waves in the 3-4ft range between the bigger swells and the surprise packet was keramas! After years of writing it off I was pleasently surprised by how good the wave really is and will definately put it on my radar for next season’s early morning destinations
The “karmic wheel” award goes to Joni Gillet, who missed his flight, snapped his board and got a huge chunk of reef in his foot all in the space of 12 hours!
All the boys came back with heaps of photos so hopefully they’ll send me some of their best ones and I can post them later.
