Jim Beam PRESENTS Australian Surf Movie Festival By Director Tim Bonython

2008 was all about Australia, forget Teahupoo we discovered some waves that were the real deal right here in Oz! Since I have been a filmer of surfing, so much has evolved over the last three decades.

In the beginning, Hawaii was the one and only location that had the WOW factor – and now look where we are at! The wow factor has been spread all over the planet.

The jetski tow-in phenomenon has bashed down the door pretty well everywhere on the planet. Its allowing adrenalin-charged surfers into places that were just a dream and impossible to surf. Australia was probably the second place on the planet, outside Hawaii, where tow-in has become most popular among the big wave challengers.

Serious tow surfing started at places like Shipsterns in Tasmania, Depot Bay on the South Coast of NSW, Cow Bombie in Western Australia, Ours in Sydney and a heap of other spots where waves were considered unrideable to paddle in at maxing size.

Australians are all over it now – the Aussie coastline is dotted with amazing surfing locations where the ocean pours out its power and creates some of the most unique and challenging surfing locations on the planet.

This Australian Surf Movie Festival is everything that we are right now! It’s all about going BIG and finding some of the most amazing waves on the planet – right here in Oz!

ASMF night is when we rock up in town with a very special ensemble of surf films, live music and door prizes. Its totally unique and will stay with you for a long time.

After six years of touring ASMF, and since the first year of showing my films in pubs and clubs way back in 1981, my seventh ASMF tour will be the best one yet.

This years tour is every bit of gold that I shot last year. Mark Mathews, Koby Abberton and Ryan Hipwood have proven themselves to be among the best big wave riders on the earth and ASMF shows them in all their glory.

Mark is captured riding the biggest wave of the year at COW Bombie, winning $20,000 first prize in the recent Oakley Big Wave Awards. But the real deal is shot at another secret place in WA where the RIGHT creates some of the craziest barrels on the planet. Just have a look at some of the frame grabs to get some idea.

One thing I have noticed in the past tours is the appreciation of addressing various segments live and this year I will continue that theme and narrate some of the segments.

The films have been shot in Queensland, NSW, Western Australia, Tasmania and Indonesia.

Each film is unique and will take you on a timeless captivating journey.  Plus there will be a profile on West Australian surf filmmaker Rick Rifici.

Surf movies were always made for the big screen and we continue that tradition. All up we believe this night of music, surf and a whole lot of fun is a one-of-a-kind experience.

Simply the best bang for your entertainment buck you will find – and we guarantee you’ll be stoked.

See you on the road …

Tim Bonython
