CLINT KIMMINS TAKES OUT THE 14TH ANNUAL BURLEIGH BOARDRIDERS SINGLE FIN CLASSIC PRESENTED BY BILLABONG.

Palm beach surfer Clint Kimmins took out the 2011 Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic, with a strong and powerful performance in overhead wild and stormy surf at Burleigh Point. Surfing a board originally owned by mentor and 1978 World Champion Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Kimmins won narrowly from a fast finishing Noah Lane (Burleigh Heads), in a 30 minute final which was a battle of endurance and stylish surfing on surfboards more than 30 years old.

Kimmins ran around Burleigh Point 2 times during the final and bore scratches and cuts from his frantic efforts to jump off the Burleigh Heads rocks. Half way through the 30 minute final, Kimmins claimed the wave of the heat, pulling off some massive turns, and scoring a long tube on the end section to take the lead from 1999 ASP World Champion Mark Occhilupo, and was not headed for the rest of the final.

Runner-up Noah Lane, closed in on Kimmins’ lead, his last wave a dynamic display of backhand single fin surfing, putting him within reach of Kimmins. With a frantic run around Burleigh Point with only 4 minutes remaining, Lane was in position to catch an event-winning wave with only one minute remaining. The wave for Lane came only 5 seconds too late, and Lane was denied the title and had to be content with second place.

Occhilupo placed 3rd, Burleigh local Tim Hyland placed 4th, MNM Boardriders stalwart Anthony Pols 5th, and perennial finalist Ryan Grey 6th. Hyland and Pols were former champions, Occhilupo and Grey former finalists, Lane and Kimmins surfing their first final in the prestigious event.

The final wrapped up the 14th year for this iconic event and festival, sponsors Billabong stoked with the event, and even though the weather was wet and wild, a large crowd congregated on the natural amphitheatre of Burleigh Point to see classic surfing on classic antique surfboards.
