We would just like to officially thank the entire club for the support you have shown us over the last few challenging weeks. We especially thank the members that helped save my life on the Sunday at the comp. We also thank the female nurse that is a member of the scouts( if anyone knows her please pass on our thanks). We thank all those that have sent their best wishes and all those that have asked after us. We thank the club for the flowers sent to the hospital and thank the visitors we have had. We thank those that have offered us help and those that stop us in the street and see how we are going – even the groms have done this!

Who would have ever thought that hanging out with the boardriders would be good for your health!

Once again it was the first week in January and it was time for the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Festival:- Summer skies, sunscreen, solar rays, surfing and single fins, a great weekend this year and every year. Once again Billabong was back to it’s roots looking after the Burleigh Boardriders and the event.

As always, the long weekend started on Friday with the charity luncheon, with MC Freddo Lang, Comedian Steve Alison cracking the crowd of 150 at the lunch, and the guest speakers were throroughly entertaining, Burleigh kid, male model, and winner of the amazing race, Tyler Atkins, gave a great insight into the world of modeling, and even gave the Champ a bit of a bagging as well. Nathan Bock, AFL player for the Gold Coast Suns, let everyone know about the life of a professional footballer. But topping all off was Occy, hilarious recalls of his dancing with stars adventures, and life on the surfing tour from the other side of the contest singlet. Shaper to the stars, Darren Handley wound up the day winning the single fin sprint, the man behind the shaping mask very quick on his feet.

Saturday saw the event commence in pumping 2-3 foot classic Burleigh rock break, sunny skies smooth and glassy with some incredible surfing on boards more than 25 years old, and surfers from 11 to 50 years of age ripping in. Once again spectators lined the point to check out the event. Also well worth checking out was the event created by Peter Harris and his partner Ange, an outdoor museum of single fin boards from many era’s, some dedicated collectors showing their favourite items for all around to see.

Standout surfing on the single fins was there for all to see, although not making the final, Kyle ‘Dvex’ Robinson, Josh Hyland, Johnny Gillette, James and Jack Lewis, Luke Egan, Brisso, and many others really showed some style. Just surfing one of those boards on the rocky with 5 other guys out was worth the entry fee.

When it came down to it, 20 year old Cabarita ripper Jason Jameson took out the 2012 Single Fin Classic presented by Billabong, in a closely fought final, the result taken to a count-back to be given the win over local lad and 2011 runner-up Noah Lane.

Conditions on the final day were tricky northerly wind-blown peaks about half to under one metre, with marine stingers peppering the line-up making difficult for the 6 finalists.

The final wrapped up 2 days of competition, where surfers competed on boards made before 1985, with one fin, and the antique boards took a bit of a battering on the Burleigh Heads rocks. The surfing standard was exceptional, the surfers putting the surfboards through turns never thought possible when the boards were created.

The final was an up and down battle with all of the surfers taking the lead at various points of the 30 minute battle, 2011 Champion Clint Kimmins starting well early, along with perennial finalist and local, Ryan Grey. Noah Lane then kicked into action with a vertical backhand attack on two long wide waves, with Cabarita’s Jason Jameson and local and 3 time winner, Kyle Robinson scoring a good wave each as well. As the final came down to the final minutes, Lane scored what was one of the best waves of the final, only to watch as Jameson picked off a long running waves, which he aggressively tore into, finishing with a huge re-entry amongst a group of swimmers.

When the final was over, Jameson and Lane could not be separated by the judges on their 2 scoring waves, so the officials had to count back to the highest scoring wave from each surfer. Jameson won compliments of his last wave, which received an average score of 8.5 from the judges.

“I am stoked”, said the 20-year-old Cabarita surfer/shaper. “I will be back next year and every year”

Jameson received the glory of the win, and to return tickets to Bali compliments of Air Asia, which he will take fellow Cabarita surfer, and finalist Brent Savage with him for a holiday.

A new addition to the Single Fin Classic, was the Junior Division, which was a real hit with the spectators, with the young grommets surfing the old single fins to an awesome standard, some of the boards 2-3 times the ages of the kids riding them. 16 year-old local Josh Hyland won the Junior Final, busting out aerial moves not even thought possible when these boards were made. Cabarita grommet Dan Sinclair placed second and another Burleigh ripper, Kane Stone third.

Once again, over 2000 people lined the rocks and grass of Burleigh Point to watch an awesome weekend of surfing, entertained by local performer, Josh Lovegrove, as the sun went down.

TYLER HARD AT WORK, LOOK FORWARD TO SOME FUNNY STORIES AT THE LUNCHEON

Burleigh kid and world recognized model/actor/TV Reality TV Star, Tyler Atkins, has just been announced as a special guest speaker at the Burleigh Boardriders Charity Luncheon, this Friday at Burleigh Bears leagues Club.

Tyler, always one of the boys at the point, first came to the world’s notice, in 2007, as Paris Hilton’s new “Aussie Surfer, Fisherman, boyfriend”. Tyler more recently has been a model in the US and Australia gracing the covers of Australian Vogue, and the pages of many other magazines.

Paris and Tyler in 2007, ancient history....

Since then Tyler has got the bucks and the fame in-between modeling assignments winning “Race Around the World Australia” with his mate Nathan Jollife broadcast all around Australia, the 2 “Surfy Lads” were favourites of the series.

Tyler is no slouch as a surfer, when here last time was seen charging Burleigh at a solid 8 foot on dark, getting a barrel that had all the boys hooting, Tyler has had a shot a competitive surfing, but his mellow nature does not suit the kill or be killed world of pro surfing. Tyler will be surfing in the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic presented by Billabong…

Tyler is no kook that is for sure!!

Well funnyman Freddo Lang should get some great stuff from Tyler, a Hollywood A-lister, knows all the who’s who, and a favourite of the ladies wherever he is. And a Burleigh Boy!!!

Josh Lovegrove is an upcoming singer, songwriter who now is a local to the Gold Coast. Since his earliest days of music making Josh’s desire to pursue a career in the music industry has grown to infinite limits. Inspired by the likes of John Mayer, Jamie Cullum and Joe Brooks, he developed a passion for commercial, acoustic music, Jam packed-full of Grooove. He prides himself as an acoustic/pop singer who will endeavor to one day, break into the commercial music scene. In 2011 Josh will be doing his final year of study at the Griffith Conservatorium, a Bachelor of Popular Music. He is currently in the process of recording his long awaited E.P and can’t wait to share it with you.

CLASSIC SURFING, ON CLASSIC BOARDS, AT WORLD CLASS CLASSIC POINT FOR THE 2012 BURLEIGH BOARDRIDERS SINGLE FIN FESTIVAL

Once again surfboards from before 1982 are being dusted pulled out of the garage and made ready for competition for the 2012 Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic presented by Billabong.

Part of the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Festival, which starts with the Burleigh Boardriders Charity Luncheon on Friday the 6^th of January, and continues with the Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic, presented by Billabong, on the iconic point break of Burleigh Heads. Over he weekend at Burleigh Point there will be host to a display of antique surfboards and memorabilia, plus a live music performance from Josh Lovegrove with the “Single Fin Acoustic Session on the Hill” on the Sunday.

The Burleigh Boardriders annual Charity Luncheon will be held at Burleigh Bears Leagues Club, hosted by funnymen, Freddo Lang and Steve Allison, with guest speakers; Mark Occhilupo, Joel Parkinson, and Shaun Hart, Gold Coast Suns Assistant Coach, Norm Smith Medalist, and 3 times AFL Premiership winning player with the Brisbane Lions. Other surprise guest speakers are also expected. There will also be a bumper sports memorabilia auction and giant raffle.

On Saturday the action turns to the surf where single fin surfboards made before 1982 hit the iconic point break of Burleigh Heads. Competitors in the event will range in age from 10 to 50 years of age, all surfing on boards over 30 years of age. Competitors in previous years include: – Mick Fanning, Occy, Luke Egan, Dave Rastovich, Cheyne Horan, Gary Elkerton, Bede Durbidge, Jay “Bottle” Thompson, Jockey Damien Oliver, and Rugby League legend, Andrew Johns just to name a few.

This year Occy, and Luke Egan will don the singlet again, but will have a troop of up and coming champions giving them a great run for their money for the Single Fin Classic Title. 2011 Champion, Clint Kimmins will be defending his title, and is keen to make it 2 in a row. Here are some of Clint’s thoughts on the event-

“The single fin is one of those events that you just really want to win. The contest isn’t about the money or the prizes- it’s about trying to surf well in front of your mates. I respect all the old boys out at the point and to surf on the boards that they use to ride back in the day is not only fun but also a great challenge.

Burleigh is a place that I’ve grown up surfing; I feel I know the waves really well so I’m hoping for a repeat performance of last years win.

There’s always a great vibe on the point and the event pulls a good crowd. Everyone is hooting and cheering and it just feels good when you pull the heat jersey on. It’s an honor to be able to surf the point in a contest on a single fin. “

One of Clint’s good mates, Noah Lane, was runner-up in last year’s event, and is keen to grab a win in 2012. Noah is a Burleigh Boardrider, and has been competing in the event since he was 10 years of age. Noah’s Dad, Justin was a member of Burleigh Boardriders, and Noah is the local crowd favourite. His dynamic backhand style has earned him a wildcard to the Breaka pro for Burleigh Boardriders, and will definitely one to watch. Other Burleigh Boardriders to keep an eye on will be young guns Josh Hyland, his brother and former winner, Tim Hyland. Another former winner to keep an eye on will be ASP Australasian Pro Junior Champion of 2011, Thomas Woods,  Woodsy won the contest in 2010, at only 17 years of age.

Another Burleigh local ripper, Kyle “Dvex” Robinson, also known as “3 in-a-row Deveccio”, after winning the event 3 years running, is a constant finalist in the event. Dvex loves Burleigh and the single fin classic;

“At Xmas 1983 I received my first surfboard an MR Single fin. The Single Fin Classic being held just after Xmas each year, means I can dust off the old single fin and re-live some of the gold old times! I get to say Happy New Year to my mates, surf my favourite contest, at my favourite place on earth, Burleigh Heads.”

The last word on the single fin should go to “The Sheriff of Burleigh Heads”, Dwayne Harris. Dwayne is a life member of Burleigh Boardriders, and a well-known figure at Burleigh Point for decades…

“The single fin to me is a fun contest a reunion for all the old crew and a memorial to remember our fallen brothers and sisters. It is not a pro contest, the idea is to keep it real, don’t be serious, and have fun. Also to remember the reason for the contest to have fun and to pay our respects to all our lost surfing friends.”

The Burleigh Boardriders Single Fin Classic, presented by Billabong, is to be held Saturday and Sunday, the 7^th and 8^th of January 2012. Limited entries are available, entry forms can be found at www.burleighboardriders.com.au , competition commences 8am both days.
